Core is excited to add Joe Wilson as a new team member. Keep reading to get to know Joe a little bit better!

What drew you to human factors and what drew you to Core?

Why do people do what they do? I just love any attempt to try and answer this question, and it's one that can be pursued academically. But towards the end of graduate school, I started to look at fields where this question could be posed practically. Human factors attracted me because that question is really at the heart of what a lot of the work involves. At Core, I knew I would get to ponder that question as an essential aspect of the job. And with the broad variety of devices and products Core deals with, it never feels stale.

What is one fun fact about yourself?

I've been to every US state except Hawaii. I need to book a trip soon for completion.

What is your educational or professional background and how does it relate to your everyday job at Core?

My background is cognitive psychology (master's and PhD in progress). There's definitely a great deal of overlap between the day-to-day of HF and the cog research I did. Finding the appropriate design for a study, writing reports, and thinking critically about data, especially as it pertains to interpreting participant behavior. All of those research skills transfer over and much of the theoretical frameworks in HF have their foundations in cognitive psychology.

What do you enjoy doing most outside of work?

Biking around Philly. Great trails and so many places to explore.

What is the worst (or best?) design you have ever seen and why?

Automatic flush toilets. I'd say about 75% of the time you use them, they flush prematurely, like while you're doing your "paperwork" for example. Either that or they don't flush at all and you have to go back to manual. Very annoying.
