Welcome to Core, Jack!
Welcome to Core!
What drew you to human factors and what drew you to Core?
I used to work at a software company that designed banking/investment products, and I became interested in the decisions that went into how new features were designed, not just why we were implementing them for a business purpose. I realized that the people using the products were at the center of the story and I was drawn to human factors because I wanted to learn how to connect with users to make better tools.
What is one fun fact about yourself?
I’m a dual citizen of the US and the UK!
What is your educational or professional background and how does it relate to your everyday job at Core?
I have a Masters in Behavioral and Decision Sciences and I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how the design of our environments contributes to our judgements, decisions, and behaviors. The behavioral economists would call that our ‘choice architecture’, but it really isn’t all that different from the ‘affordances’ that human factors folks talk about. I feel like the work at Core is an exciting opportunity to continue to explore how design itself shapes behaviors.
What do you enjoy doing most outside of work?
I like relaxing with friends, hiking, pickup sports, playing guitar, and photography.
What is the worst (or best?) design you have ever seen and why? (Does not have to be medical related)
I’m going to keep it positive here! I think a lot about which everyday designs offer the best values for everyone, and why things become timeless classics. For example, a cast iron skillet will function flawlessly with daily use for generations, and you can get one for under thirty dollars. That’s incredible!
