Bert, the Human Factors Manikin

Image
Nicole Stephenson: Well hello Bert, thanks for taking the time to talk with me today.   Bert the Manikin: No problem! Happy to chat. NS: First, can you tell me the difference between a manikin and a mannequin?   BM: Of course! Mannequins are mainly used as models for clothing in stores. A glamorous life! I’m a manikin — we are used in healthcare and research settings for educational purposes.   NS: I see. Two important but very different jobs. How do you help with healthcare training and education? BM: Well, people can use me and others like me in all kinds of ways: to learn CPR, to practice surgery, to learn anatomy, and more. I personally help with human factors testing at Core Human Factors. NS: What kinds of things do you do there? BM: I help with all kinds of products. Nurses, caregivers, and even laypeople use me to pretend they’re interacting with an actual person while testing out a new medical device. I get poked and prodded quite a bit, but I don’...

Welcome to Core, Ayline! Core is excited to add Ayline Mejia as a new recruiting team member. Keep reading to get to know Ayline a little bit better! What is one fun fact about yourself?  I love to travel so much! I have visited places like the UK, Puerto Rico, Italy, France and more! Next on my bucket list is Japan or Bali. What is your educational or professional background and how does it relate to your everyday job at Core (or might not relate but love to know more about you!)? I went to the University of Delaware before this where I had leadership roles that really helped me understand how to work with people and interact with different personalities which I feel like will help with recruiting and outreach here at Core.  What do you enjoy doing most outside of work?  I enjoy thrifting, finding new restaurants to try, astrology, and going out with my friends and family. What is the worst (or best?) design you have ever seen and why? (Does not have to be m...

Welcome to Core, Jack!

Welcome to Core! Core is excited to welcome Jack Sharples to the team! Keep reading to learn a little bit more about him.  What drew you to human factors and what drew you to Core? I used to work at a software company that designed banking/investment products, and I became interested in the decisions that went into how new features were designed, not just why we were implementing them for a business purpose. I realized that the people using the products were at the center of the story and I was drawn to human factors because I wanted to learn how to connect with users to make better tools. What is one fun fact about yourself? I’m a dual citizen of the US and the UK! What is your educational or professional background and how does it relate to your everyday job at Core? I have a Masters in Behavioral and Decision Sciences and I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how the design of our environments contributes to our judgements, decisions, and behaviors. The behavioral econ...

Welcome to Core, Sydney! Core is excited to add Sydney Eelman as a new recruiting team member. Keep reading to get to know Sydney a little bit better! What is one fun fact about yourself? My dream is to have a lot of land with a giant pack of rescue dogs and miscellaneous animals. What is your educational background and how does it relate to your everyday job at Core? I'm currently obtaining a bachelor's degree in biology at Millersville University to eventually become a pharmacist. Seeing all of the new medical devices being tested is awesome, and I enjoy screening participants to hear about their medical experiences and what would make their lives easier. Professionally, I was a bartender and a dealer at a casino for a long time. I can deal poker, blackjack, and craps which is completely irrelevant to Core, but it has definitely helped me with the customer service aspect of this job. What do you enjoy doing most outside of work? I have two dogs that I spend an unhealthy amo...
